So you are moving to a new home? Worried about how to pack and move your precious belongings? Not sure where to start? In this article we provide you with a little guide to make your move a little better.
Plan early – 2 to 3 months before the move
Moving plans should never be made hastily. Planning early will help you avoid stress. Here’s a few things you can do. Plan your move at least 2-3 months earlier. You should already know your destination address, make a list of items you intend to move, determine what moving service you will need such as boxes, packing supplies, etc. You should also ensure you change your correspondence address so that your important letters are redirected to your new address. You may also invite professional moving companies to come over for a site survey or perform a virtual survey. You may want to know the estimated cost to move and these professional movers would be happy to provide you with a breakdown of estimates. Once you have decided on the mover, you may request that boxes be delivered to you early for you to pack yourself, if needed. Usually we can provide the boxes and other packing supplies to you early for you to start packing early. You can also decide to get rid of anything you don’t need as packing everything can be overwhelming. Before you begin packing, you can decide to purge any unused and unnecessary items.
2-3 weeks before the move
By this time, you should have already received your boxes and started packing. Keep this is mind when you pack your items in boxes:
- Use the right size box for your items. Heavy items should be placed in small boxes while large and lighter items can be placed in big boxes. Your mover may have to repack if the large box is too heavy to move. This will cost us time and as you know time is money.
- Don’t leave empty spaces in the boxes. Empty or loosely packed boxes should be filled with packing paper, cloth or towel.
- Keep items in the same room in the same box. This will make packing and unpacking easier.
- Ensure you tape your boxes well. Use a double piece of tape to tape the bottom of the box and ensure nothing falls out from the boxes.
- If you live in a condo or a gated and guarded residential area, you may want to register the mover with the management office. Your mover will be able to provide you with the details earlier.
1 day before the move
Pack an overnight back. This is the place for you to keep your toiletries, toothbrush, change of clothes, etc. Save searching through the boxes. Remove items from your fridge and place them in a cold box. You may now turn off and defrost your fridge.
On the day of the move
Ensure you request your mover to come in early. Starting early in the day will help the mover complete the move early and you would be able to have more time to organize your home. Starting the move early would also help you prepare for any eventualities such as lift breakdown at the condo, building management security issues, or any other unforeseen issues. Ensure you are around to guide the mover on where to place the items. The mover will help unload and place your items as you desire. You will also need to guide the mover on where each box goes. Once moving is complete the mover will clean the moving debris.
